Artificial grass in Adelaide typically costs $55–$110 per square metre supplied and installed, depending on the turf, the base preparation, access and the shape of the area. Installed on a compacted crushed-rock base with proper drainage and edging, synthetic turf suits shady courtyards, pet areas, pool surrounds and low-water yards. Ask us for a free turf quote.

We install artificial grass across Adelaide — backyards, front yards, courtyards, balconies, pet runs, pool surrounds and the shady corners where real lawn gives up. Synthetic turf is only as good as what’s underneath it, so most of our quote is about the base: excavation, compacted crushed rock, drainage and edging. Get that right and a quality turf lasts around 15–20 years.

What artificial grass costs in Adelaide

Most residential artificial grass in Adelaide costs $55–$110 per square metre supplied and installed. Where your job lands in that range depends on:

  • The turf itself. Pile height, density, the number of colour tones and whether it has a thatch layer all change the price per roll. Landscape turf for lawns sits above short-pile putting or sport surfaces.
  • Base preparation. Removing an existing lawn and topsoil, carting it away and bringing in crushed rock is often the biggest line item — and the one cheap installs skip.
  • Access. Wheelbarrow-only access through a house or down a narrow side path takes longer than a bobcat through a double gate.
  • Shape and joins. Curves, garden beds, pavers and pool edges mean more cutting, more joins and more waste than a simple rectangle.
  • Extras. Pet-friendly infill, foam underlay over concrete, new edging or garden-bed kerbs.

Your written quote itemises each of these, so you can see exactly where the money goes. If you’re still deciding between synthetic and real lawn, our artificial grass vs real grass comparison for Adelaide walks through cost, water, heat and upkeep side by side.

How we install synthetic turf

  1. Measure and plan. We check levels, drainage, access and where the rolls will join, so seams run in the least visible direction.
  2. Excavate. Existing grass, roots and topsoil come out, typically to a depth of 75–100mm, so the new surface sits flush with paths and edges.
  3. Edge restraint. Timber, steel, concrete kerb or paver edging holds the base and turf in place.
  4. Crushed-rock base. A layer of crushed rock is spread, levelled and plate-compacted, with falls so water drains away from the house.
  5. Weed membrane and bedding. A weed membrane and a fine screeded layer give a smooth, even finish.
  6. Lay and join. The turf is rolled out, joined with joining tape and adhesive, trimmed and pinned.
  7. Infill and brush. Sand or a specialised infill is spread and brushed in to hold the blades upright and add weight.

Choosing the right turf

Pile height and feel

For an Adelaide family lawn, a pile of around 30–40mm usually gives a natural look that still stands up to play. Longer piles look lush but flatten faster in high-traffic paths. Short, dense piles suit putting greens, balconies and sport areas.

Pet-friendly turf

If you have dogs, choose a turf with a fully permeable backing, lay it over a free-draining base and use an antimicrobial infill. A regular hose-down keeps odours in check, particularly through summer.

Ask the right questions

Ask what the manufacturer’s warranty covers (UV fading and backing are the common ones), whether the product is UV-stabilised for Australian sun, and what infill is recommended. A sample in your hand in your own light tells you more than a photo.

Artificial grass and Adelaide conditions

  • Summer heat. Synthetic turf gets much hotter than natural grass in direct sun. Shade from a tree, sail or pergola, a lighter product and a quick rinse before use all help. For west-facing yards with no shade, we’ll talk through whether it’s the right choice.
  • Reactive clay soils. Much of metropolitan Adelaide sits on clay that holds water. A compacted crushed-rock base and proper falls stop water ponding under the turf after winter rain.
  • Water use. Synthetic turf needs no watering to survive, which is why it’s popular in courtyards and rentals. It still benefits from an occasional rinse.
  • Shade and trees. It’s a good answer for deep shade where lawn won’t grow, but deciduous trees drop leaves that need blowing off regularly.
  • Coastal suburbs. Sandy soils in the western and southern beachside suburbs drain well, but wind-blown sand works into the pile, so a quick brush every few weeks keeps it looking fresh.

Where artificial turf works best

Courtyards and small backyards, deep shade, high-traffic play areas, rentals and holiday homes, around pools, balconies and rooftops, pet runs and nature strips. It’s less suited to very large open areas, where cost climbs quickly, and to people who simply prefer the feel of real grass. If a living lawn is the better fit, we also quote lawn installation and landscape design, and our guide to lawn installation in Adelaide covers soil preparation through to first mow.

Looking after artificial grass

Brush against the grain every month or two, blow off leaves, rinse away dust and pet mess, and top up infill in the busiest areas every few years. That’s about it — no mowing, fertilising or summer watering.

Frequently asked questions

How much does artificial turf cost in Adelaide?

$55–$110 per square metre supplied and laid. Premium and pet-friendly turf, removal of an existing lawn, tight access and complex shapes push the price toward the upper end.

Does artificial grass get hot in summer?

Yes. In direct summer sun synthetic turf gets much hotter than natural grass and can be uncomfortable barefoot. Shade, a lighter-coloured product, a cooling infill and a quick rinse before use all help.

How long does artificial turf last?

Properly installed, around 15–20 years. The pile flattens in heavy-traffic areas over time; the quality of the base and the backing decide how long it lasts.

Is artificial grass good for dogs?

It can be. Choose a turf with a fully permeable backing, lay it over a free-draining base and use an antimicrobial infill, then hose it down regularly. Dogs that dig or chew are harder on any surface.

Can artificial turf go over concrete or pavers?

Yes, with a foam underlay and enough fall for water to drain off. On soil, the existing grass and topsoil are removed and replaced with a compacted crushed-rock base before the turf goes down.

Does artificial grass need any water?

Not to grow, which is why it suits low-water yards. An occasional rinse removes dust and, if you have pets, keeps odours down.
