Pergolas Adelaide
Pergolas built across Adelaide in timber, steel, aluminium and louvred roofs. Typical costs, council approval explained, and a free written pergola quote.
A pergola in Adelaide typically costs $4,500–$16,000 for an attached 4×4m structure before roofing, depending on timber, steel or aluminium, while motorised louvred pergolas start around $20,000. Most roofed pergolas need council approval. We design and build pergolas across Adelaide and can include approval in your free, itemised quote.
A pergola is often the project that turns an Adelaide backyard from “sometimes used” into the room you live in for nine months of the year. We design and build pergolas across Adelaide in timber, powder-coated steel, aluminium and motorised louvred systems — attached to the house or freestanding, with an open roof, polycarbonate, Colorbond or insulated panels.
This page covers the pergola types we build, what a pergola costs in Adelaide, how council approval works in South Australia, and the local conditions that shape a good design. If you already know what you want, request a free pergola quote and we’ll get back to you within 24–48 hours.
Pergola types we build in Adelaide
Timber pergolas
Treated pine is the most affordable way into a pergola. Hardwoods such as merbau, spotted gum and blackbutt cost more upfront but last decades longer and suit heritage and character homes. Timber is easy to modify later — adding a roof, lights or a fan is straightforward — but it needs oiling every year or it weathers to silver-grey. Spans are typically limited to around 5 metres without extra engineering.
Steel pergolas
Powder-coated structural steel gives clean, modern lines and longer spans with fewer posts, which keeps views open across the yard. Steel is a good match for contemporary homes and larger entertaining areas. In coastal suburbs such as Glenelg, Henley Beach and Semaphore we specify coatings and fixings rated for salt air.
Aluminium pergolas
Aluminium is the lowest-maintenance option and doesn’t rust, so it’s a natural fit near the coast. Kit-style aluminium pergolas sit at the lower end of the price range; custom-fabricated designs cost more. Most aluminium pergolas come with an integrated polycarbonate or insulated panel roof.
Louvred pergolas
Motorised aluminium louvres rotate from fully open to fully closed, giving you winter sun, summer shade and rain cover in one structure. They are the premium choice — read our guide to louvred pergolas in Adelaide for an honest look at whether the extra cost is worth it for your household.
Roof options
The roof matters as much as the frame. Open beams let sun and breeze through and are the cheapest option. Clear or tinted polycarbonate keeps the rain off and cuts UV. Solid Colorbond gives full shade. Insulated panels cost the most of the fixed roofs, but for a pergola you’ll use through an Adelaide January and February they make the biggest difference to comfort underneath — the space stays noticeably cooler than under polycarbonate.
What a pergola costs in Adelaide
For a mid-spec attached pergola of about 4×4 metres, these are the ranges we publish in our pergola cost guide:
| Pergola type | Typical range (4×4m attached) |
|---|---|
| Treated pine timber, open beams | $4,500–$8,000 |
| Hardwood timber, open beams | $7,000–$13,000 |
| Aluminium | $7,000–$15,000 |
| Steel, powder-coated | $8,000–$16,000 |
| Louvred (motorised) | $20,000–$40,000+ |
Roofing adds to an open-beam price: roughly $1,500–$3,500 for polycarbonate, $3,000–$6,000 for Colorbond and $5,000–$9,000 for insulated panels on a 16 square metre pergola. Larger spans, freestanding designs, posts set on existing tiles or pavers, custom shapes, built-in lighting and fans, and drop-down blinds all push the price up. These are market ranges, not promises — your quote is itemised for your site.
Council approval for pergolas in South Australia
Most pergolas in South Australia need development approval, and roofed pergolas and verandahs generally do. Some open-topped pergolas can be exempt if they meet conditions on size, height and siting — but heritage, bushfire and flood overlays change the answer, so check with your council or PlanSA before building.
Applications are lodged through the PlanSA portal and need a site plan, elevations, footing details and usually engineering certification. Assessment typically takes 4–12 weeks, longer if neighbours are notified. We check your property’s zoning before quoting and tell you upfront whether your design needs approval. Our step-by-step guide explains whether you need council approval for a pergola in Adelaide.
Designing a pergola for Adelaide conditions
- Summer heat. West- and north-facing pergolas cop the afternoon sun. Roof choice, height and orientation matter more here than in milder cities.
- Heritage areas. Parts of North Adelaide, Burnside, Walkerville and Unley have strict character rules, and timber is often preferred over Colorbond or aluminium.
- Coastal suburbs. Salt air shortens the life of bare steel and standard fixings, so we use coastal-rated coatings and stainless fixings near the sea.
- Adelaide Hills. Bushfire-prone overlays can dictate materials, and sloping blocks often need taller posts and engineered footings.
- Reactive soils. Much of metropolitan Adelaide sits on clay that moves between wet and dry seasons, so footings are designed to suit the site rather than guessed.
How a pergola project works with us
- Tell us about your project — suburb, rough size, material and roof preference, and photos if you have them.
- Site measure and design — we confirm boundaries, orientation, drainage and how the pergola meets the house.
- Itemised quote — frame, roof, footings, engineering, approval and extras listed separately, so you can see where the money goes.
- Approval — drawings and engineering prepared and lodged where your design needs it.
- Build — usually two to four weeks on site, followed by a final check and clean-up.
Pair your pergola with the rest of the outdoor area
A pergola usually sits over a deck or paved area, and it’s worth planning them together so heights, falls and drainage line up. See our decking services, paving in Adelaide and the wider outdoor living and alfresco builds page for how the pieces fit.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a pergola cost in Adelaide?
For an attached pergola of about 4×4 metres, treated pine starts around $4,500–$8,000, hardwood $7,000–$13,000, aluminium $7,000–$15,000 and powder-coated steel $8,000–$16,000. Motorised louvred pergolas start around $20,000 and can pass $40,000. Roof choice, size, access and approval all move the final number.
Do I need council approval for a pergola in Adelaide?
Usually, yes — especially for a pergola with a solid, water-shedding roof, which is treated like a verandah. Some open-topped pergolas can be exempt if they meet conditions on size, height and siting, but heritage, bushfire and flood overlays change the rules. Check with your council or PlanSA. We check your property before quoting and can include approval in the price.
How long does it take to build a pergola?
Most pergolas take two to four weeks on site once approval is granted. Where development approval is needed, allow roughly six to twelve weeks for drawings, engineering and council assessment before work starts.
Should I choose timber, steel or aluminium for my pergola?
Timber suits warm, traditional homes and is the cheapest entry point, but needs oiling. Steel gives clean modern lines and longer spans with fewer posts. Aluminium is the lowest-maintenance option and copes well near the coast. Louvred roofs suit people who want sun and rain control in one structure.
Is a louvred pergola worth it in Adelaide?
If you want to use the space year-round, often yes — the louvres open for winter sun and close for summer shade or rain. They cost two to three times a fixed-roof pergola, so for occasional use an insulated or polycarbonate roof is usually better value.
